ATHENS — Athens didn’t get many oppotunities to score, but it took advantage when it did in a 3-1 win over Greene here Saturday morning in non-league boys soccer action at Alumni Stadium.

“This is a great win for the boys,” said Athens coach Jake Lezak.
 
“Greene is a solid team and was dominant throughout the match.

“Our players were very resilient and adaptable to what we did today,” he noted.

“They should be very proud of how they played and the team effort today,” added Lezak. “The hope is that this is a turning point and we keep improving.”

The Wildcats only managed four shots-on-goal in the match, and were outshot, 9-4. They did have a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Freshman Patrick Umber scored midway through the first half, and Wildcats led 1-0 at the intermission.

Sophomore Kamdyn Wheeler, off a feed from senior Braden Quinn, scored with 27:41 remaining in the contest to make it 2-0.

Greene answered about three minutes later to close the gap to 2-1, but junior Chase Ingram, off an assist from senior Troy Rosenbloom, added an insurance goal late in the game for the Wildcats.

Sophomore Zach Fisher recorded eight saves in net for Athens.

Unbeaten in its last five games at 4-0-1, Athens improves to 5-4-1 on the season.

The Wildcats return to action Monday at league-leading Wellsboro (8-1 overall, 6-0 NTL).
