STAC GIRLS SOCCER: UNBEATEN CHENANGO VALLEY RIDES SECOND-HALF FLURRY OF GOALS TO 6-1 WIN OVER WAVERLY IN BATTLE OF DIVISIONAL LEADERS (2024-09-24)

Valley Sports Report
BINGHAMTON — The showdown of divisional leaders was off to a rousing start, but Chenango Valley scored five second-half goals to blow open a tie game in a 6-1 win over Waverly here Tuesday night in STAC Central Division girls soccer action.

“We were off to a good start, but this was a rough game,” said Waverly coach Tara Hogan.

“We knew Chenango Valley would come out hard and fast,” she noted. “We scrambled to find our composure and failed to play our possession game.

“Once Kait scored that goal, we saw a noticeable change in energy, but still failed to really settle the ball and play smart.

We were caught out-of-position often and that left gaps in our lineup in dangerous places,” said Hogan.

“This was a good learning experience for us and we know we have a lot to build on before seeing them again,” Hogan added.

Junior Kaitlyn Sutton, off a feed from freshman Maci Wheeler, scored Waverly’s only goal of the game midway through the first half to put the Wolverines up 1-0. She took the pass, cut to her right, pushed the ball past a couple defenders, and fired a shot into the back of the net from just outside the 18.

CV standout Maddy Hayes tied the game with 8 minutes remaining in the first half, then gave the Warriors the lead for good, at 2-1, just three minutes into the second half.

Hayes scored three more goals, and Emily Nickson added one in a 14-minute span late in the second half that put the Warriors up 6-1 with five minutes remaining in the contest.

CV had a 19-10 advantage in shots-on-goal. Waverly had a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.

Junior Claire Clonch recorded 10 saves in net for Waverly, and Addison Temple added one.

Waverly, now 7-2 overall, falls to 6-1 in league play, while CV improves to 6-0, 6-0.

The Wolverines will look to bounce back Saturday at home against Seton Catholic.
