DISTRICT 4 GOLF: ATHENS SHATTERS SCHOOL RECORD; WINS CLASS 3A TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP (11 PHOTOS) (2024-09-26)

Valley Sports Report
MONTGOMERY — Athens shattered a school record on its way to the team title at District 4, Class AAA Golf championships here Tuesday at White Deer Golf Club.

The Wildcats shot a four-player aggregate score of 306, eclipsing the mark of 317 they set earlier this season, and bested runner-up Jersey Shore by 13 strokes, and third-place Selinsgrove by 15 shots..

“These were fantastic scores on a day we had rain throughout the entire day,” said Athens coach Lenny Pientka. “Honestly, I do not know how they could  even hold on to the club.”

“It was a very gutsy performance by all of them,” noted Pientka. “I’m very proud of all them today, but I have been extremely proud of them the entire season.

“Now it’s on to Regionals,” he added. “We will give it our best to get to States as a team.”

Freshman Eli Hicks led the Wildcats with a 1-over par runs of 73 on the 5,917-yard course. He carded three birdies — on the 340-yard, par-3 first hole, the 465-yard, par-4 second hole, and the 486-yard, par-5 14th hole.

Senior Dylan Saxon shot a 75, including birdies on the second hole and the 482-yard, par-5 8th hole, while Ty Owen carded a 76 with birdies on the 270-yard, par-4 third hole, and the 353-yard, par-4 16th hole.

Senior Brady Darrow added an 82 for the Wildcats.

The Sub-Regional Championship (with District 2) will be held Oct. 10 at Fox Hill Country Club in Exeter, Pa.
