Valley Sports ReportATHENS — Elmira scored a pair of first-half goals on its way to a 2-0 win over Athens here Saturday morning in non-league boys soccer action at Alumni Stadium.
Spencer Wheeler gave the Express a 1-0 lead about eight minutes into the contest, then made it 2-0 with 10:22 remaining in the first half.
“Tough one today,” said Athens coach Jake Lezak. “We need to continue to work harder and find ways to score.”
Elmira had an 8-1 advantage in shots-on-goal, while Athens had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks
Sophomore Zach Fisher recorded six saves in net for the Wildcats.
LEZAK HONORED WITH NAME ON 'COACHES WALL OF FAME’The highlight of the day was Lezak’s name being added to the Athens "Coaches Wall of Fame” at Alumni Stadium.
Lezak was honored prior to the game with many of his former players in attendance.
Currently in his 21st season at the helm of the Wildcats, Lezak has 276 victories, two District 4 titles, and countless NTL titles.
Lezak was also named the 2019-20 National Federation of High Schools Pa. Boys Soccer Coach of the Year.
