NTL GIRLS SOCCER: ATHENS DOMINATES IN 4-0 WIN OVER WELLSBORO (24 PHOTOS) (2024-10-01)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — Sophomore Delanie Patton scored a pair of goals, and dished out one assist to lead Athens in a 4-0 win over Wellsboro here Tuesday evening in NTL Large School Division girls soccer action.
“It was a full team effort for 80 minutes,” said Athens coach Rich Pitts. “I thought we controlled the game as well as we have all season.
“It’s October, so we talked Monday about how this is district month and how we want to prepare in training and games,” added Pitts.
Senior Addy Wheeler scored the first goal of the game off a cross from Patton, who was set up by a pass from sophomore Brinley Nichols with 23:55 remaining in the first half.
Sophomore Brielle Mayo scored off a re-direct about 5 1/2 minutes later to make it 2-0, which is where it stood at the half.
Patton scored a pair of unassisted goals in the second half to put the game away.
Patton scored her first goal with 22:30 remaining in the game, then beat the Wellsboro keeper in a 1-v-1 with 7 minutes left to provide the final margin.
Athens had a 20-3 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 9-0 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Carmelita Pomaquiza recorded two saves in net for the Wildcats.
Athens, now 9-2, returns to action Thursday at North Penn-Mansfield.
