NTL GIRLS SOCCER: ATHENS BLOWS GAME OPEN IN SECOND HALF; BLANKS NP-M, 4-0 (2024-10-03)
Valley Sports ReportMANSFIELD — Athens scored twice early in the second half to break open a one-goal game on its way to a 4-0 win over North Penn-Mansfield here Thursday afternoon in NTL girls soccer action.
“We did a really good job in the defensive- and middle-third,” said Athens coach Rich Pitts. “But in the final third, we need to be better and finish chances.
“It was not our best performance overall, but we got the win and we move into next week ready for battles heading into Districts,” he added.
Sophomore Delanie Patton scored an unassisted goal with a shot into the upper-90 just 90 seconds into the game, but the Wildcats, despite near-constant pressure on the NP-M net could not dent their defense again in the first 40 minutes.
About 6 1/2 minutes after the intermission, junior Olivia Thompson fielded a cross from Patton and found the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Nearly five minutes later, Thompson collected a rebound off a shot by senior Addy Wheeler and found the back of the net again to extend the lead to 3-0.
Wheeler provided the final margin, scoring off a corner kick with 30 seconds left in the game.
Athens had a 31-0 advantage shots-on-goal, and 7-0 edge in corner kicks.
The Wildcats, now 10-2, return to action Wednesday at Williamson.
