NTL BOYS SOCCER: ATHENS SCORES IN FINAL MINUTES TO TIE WILLIAMSPORT, 1-1 (14 PHOTOS) (2024-10-05)
Valley Sports ReportWILLIAMSPORT — Athens scored in the final minutes of regulation to salvage a 1-1 tie with Williamsport here Saturday afternoon in non-league boys soccer action.
“I was very proud of the boys today,” said longtime Athens coach Jake Lezak.
“We got a few big saves from (Zach) Fisher and (Brayden) Onofre,” he noted. “The boys played a great second half … it’s a great step forward for us.”
Williamsport took a 1-0 lead with 22:12 remaining in regulation on an Athens own goal.
with 2:34 remaining, Eli Benninger-Jones found the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
“Eli (Benninger-Jones) scored a great goal to notch it,” said Lezak.
The two teams battled scoreless for the remainder of regulation, and through two 10-minute overtime periods.
Williamsport had an 8-2 advantage in shots-on-goal, and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
Fisher and Onofre recorded seven saves in net for the Wildcats.
Athens, now 6-6-2, hosts Galeton Tuesday.
