STAC BOYS SOCCER: WAVERLY'S COMEBACK BID FALLS SHORT IN 4-2 LOSS TO CHENANGO VALLEY (2024-10-08)
Valley Sports ReportBINGHAMTON — Chenango Valley scored three first-half goals, then held off a pesky Waverly effort for a 4-2 win here Tuesday night in STAC Central Division boys soccer action.
“I am proud of the boys for their improvements and adjustments made in the second half of the game,” said Waverly’s first-year coach Jon Rankin.
“We put up a good fight to start the game,’ he noted. “Once we got scored on in the bottom half, we let up two more quick goals. It was an accumulation of poor decisions and poor touches.
“We weren’t playing as a team, we were playing as groups,” added Rankin.
The Warriors scored with 11:30 remaining in the first half, then scored two goals in less than two minutes to extend the lead to 3-0 with 6 minutes remaining in the half.
In the second half, Jesse Lantz crashed the net on a cross from Peyton Robinson and was able to push the ball past the CV keeper to put the Wolverines on the board.
Waverly added a goal on a “beautiful shot” by Logan Roskow off a series of passes to provide the final margin.
“In the second half, the boys pulled together and scored two beautiful goals,” said Rankin.
“The coaches know what these boys are capable of and we got to see it when Logan scored his goal,” noted Rankin. “We played the ball quick, we controlled the tempo, and we made good decisions.
“CV is a good team,” added Rankin. “They are well-coached and they play as a whole unit. It was a good competition and, hopefully, made for an exciting senior night for their team.”
Chenango Valley had a 16-5 advantage in shots-on-goal, and an 11-0 edge in corner kicks.
Aiden Doherty recorded 12 saves in net for the Wolverines.
Waverly, now 1-11, returns to action Thursday at SVEC.
