STAC GIRLS SWIMMING: WAVERLY RALLIES TO TOP ONEONTA, 91-84 (17 PHOTOS) (2024-10-08)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — A 1-2 finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay propelled Waverly to a come-from-behind, 91-84, win over Oneonta here Tuesday afternoon in STAC girls swimming action.
The unbeaten Wolverines trailed 58-57 after eight events, but took the lead for good in the ninth — the 200 free relay.
Junior Mira Kittle, 8th-grader Brynna Twedt, freshman Lauryn Welles, and junior Olivia Cheresnowsky teamed to win the 200 free relay in a time of 1:46.61, while 8th-graders Natalie Steck, Ayla Wheeler, Audrey Kellogg, and Megan Atanasoff finished second in 1:48.97.
The 12-2 advantage in the relay put Waverly ahead 69-60.
Kittle was a four-time winner for the Wolverines, who improve to 5-0, while Welles and Cheresnowsky were triple-winners.
Kittle led a sweep of the top three spots in the 50-yard freestyle, clocking in at 25.14 seconds, while Atanasoff was second in 26.37, and Cheresnowsky was third in 26.78 seconds.
Kittle also won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:00.06.
Kittle, Cheresnowsky and Welles teamed with Steck to win the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:57.39.
Cheresnowsky won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:08.49, and Wheeler was fourth in a personal-best time of 1:17.02.
Welles won the 100-yard freestyle in a personal-best time of 58.12 seconds, and Kellogg was second in 58.64 seconds.
Welles finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:16.98, and Steck was third in 1:17.63.
Kellogg also finished second in the 200-yard IM in a personal-best time of 2:32.55, and Steck was third in a personal-best 2:34.47. Twedt was sixth in a personal-best time of 2:42.33.
Senior Liz Robinson finished third in the 200-yard freestyle in time of 2:16.84. She was also third in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 6:20.51.
