STAC GIRLS SOCCER: CHENANGO VALLEY BLANKS WAVERLY, 3-0, TO CLINCH DIVISION TITLE (2024-10-08)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Chenango Valley standout Maddie Hayes scored a pair of goals to lead the Warriors to a 3-0 win over Waverly here Tuesday night in STAC Central Division girls soccer action at Memorial Stadium.
In their first meeting, Hayes scored four of her five goals in the second half to lead CV to a 6-1 win in a game tied at 1-1 at the half.
“We knew this would be a battle,” said Waverly coach Tara Hogan. “Knowing how things went the last time we faced them, we were more prepared.
We had good energy going onto the field,” she noted. “We fell short when it came to connecting our passes. Our pattern has been to work so hard to get the ball, then fail to connect it to a teammate.”
Hogan said her team was much better defensively than in their first encounter.
“CV likes to have an outside-mid or forward play really wide on one side of the field,” she said. “We were more prepared for this tonight.
“And, Claire Clonch had a fantastic game finding herself in a multi-save scenario,” added Hogan. “She would dive to save one and have to jump right back up to save another. She was fantastic.”
With the win, Chenango Valley clinches the Central Division title.
Hayes scored midway through the first half to give CV a 1-0 lead, which it would carry into the halftime intermission.
With 28 minutes remaining in the game, Hayes converted a penalty kick to increase the lead to 2-0.
Tiffani Schaefer added an insurance goal for CV late in the game.
CV had a 22-5 advantage in shots-on-goal, while Waverly had a 2-0 edge in corner kicks.
Junior Claire Clonch recorded 21 saves in net for the Wolverines.
Waverly, now 10-3, wraps up regular season at Horseheads Tuesday.
