NTL GIRLS SOCCER: WILLIAMSON RALLIES IN SECOND HALF TO EDGE ATHENS, 2-1 (19 PHOTOS) (2024-10-09)
Valley Sports ReportWESTFIELD, Pa. — Williamson scored a pair of second-half goals to rally for a 2-1 win over Athens here Wednesday evening in NTL girls soccer action.
The loss is the first for the Wildcats in league play, and drops them 1 game behind Troy in the NTL standings.
“Hats off to Williamson, they finished there chances and we didn’t,” said Athens coach Rich Pitts. “No excuses, we just get back to work as we have a lot of season left.
“I was proud of the way the girls played in very tough conditions and fought to the last seconds,” added Pitts.
Sophomore Brielle Mayo scored off a feed from sophomore Brinley Nichols midway through the first half to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.
Maddie Bailey scored in the opening minutes of the second half to tie the game at 1-1, and Tori Stratton scored the game-winner with 4:30 remaining in the contest.
Williamson had a 9-6 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 2-1 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Carmelita Pomaquiza recorded eight saves in net for the Wildats.
Athens, now 10-3, returns to action Saturday evening at Corning.
