SECTION IV FOOTBALL: 'PERFECT' SHAW DIRECTS WAVERLY IN 48-0 WIN OVER DRYDEN (2024-10-11)

Valley Sports Report
DRYDEN — Waverly scored on all six of its first-half possessions en route to a 48-0 win over Dryden here Friday night in Section IV, Division V football action.

For the second week in a row, sophomore QB Ben Shaw was perfect from the pocket, completing all seven of his pass attempts for 181 yards, and two TDs. He also added an 11-yard TD run on his only carry of the game.

In the last two games, Ben Shaw is 15—for-15 for 273 yards, and four TDs.

After a Dryden three-and-out to start the game, Waverly took over at its 42, and Shaw directed a five-play scoring drive.

After three completions to senior Xavier Watson, and a 7-yard run by senior Fletcher Good, junior Cooper Robinson scampered 19 yards to paydirt to put the Wolverines on the board with 7:59 remaining in the first quarter.

Hogan Shaw’s PAT kick made it 7-0.

The Purple Lions had a first down on a 15-yard completion erased by a holding call on its next possession, and ended up punting after three plays.

Watson returned the punt 10 yards into Dryden territory, and Shaw connected with senior Kolsen Keathley on a quick slant for a 45-yard TD with 5:32 remaining in the first quarter. Hogan Shaw’s PAT kick made it 14-0.

Dryden’s Carmello Miles returned the ensuing kickoff 53 yards to the Waverly 32, but after earning their initial first down of the game, the Lions turned the ball over on downs at the Wolverine 25.

Waverly needed just three plays to add to its lead.

Shaw connected with junior Daltton Davis in the flats, and he picked his way through the Dryden defense for a 29-yard gain to the Lion 46.

Good ripped off a 14-yard run on the next play, then scampered 32 yards untouched into the end zone with 18 seconds remaining in the opening stanza. Hogan’s Shaw’s kick made it 21-0.

After a Dryden three-and-out, Waverly took over at the Lion 45. On the first play, Watson beat single coverage, and Ben Shaw dropped a pass into his hands in stride for a 55-yard TD with 10:53 remaining in the half. Hogan Shaw’s PAT made it 28-0.

Dryden’s next possession ended after three plays, thanks to a junior Troy Beeman QB sack on third down.

Dryden’s attempt at a rugby-style went horribly wrong, and netted just 2 yards with Waverly taking over at the Lions’ 15.

Three plays later, senior Payton Fravel scored on a 1-yard TD run with 7:21 left in the half. Hogan Shaw’s PAT kick made it 35-0.

Dryden’s ensuing possession resulted in another three-and-out. Watson returned the punt 41 yards to the Lion 15, but a block-in-the-back call moved the ball back to the 46.

Waverly needed just three plays to add to its lead.

Sophomore tight end Matthias Welles hauled in a 25-yard pass, and Good ripped off a 10-yard run to set up Shaw’s 11-yard TD run on a QB keeper with 3:39 remaining in the half.

Waverly piled up 289 yards in total offense in the first half, compared to 43 for Dryden.

The second half was played under running time, and Waverly had just two possessions.

The first was a seven-play, 56-yard drive that featured a 25-yard run by senior Seth Noto, and four carries for 36 yards by sophomore Bryce LaForest.

Davis capped the drive with an 8-yard TD run on a QB keeper to make it 48-0 with 6:02 remaining in the third quarter.

Watson led Waverly’s receivers with four grabs for 81 yards, and one TD.

LaForest led Waverly’s ground game, which accounted for 232 yards on 25 carries, with 70 yards on 11 carries, while Good had 63 yards and one TD on four carries.

Davis added 29 yards and one TD on three carries, and had one catch for 29 yards.
