Valley Sports Report CORNING — Corning scored a pair of second-half goals to pull out a 2-0 win over Athens here Friday night in non-league girls soccer action.
“I was pleased with the way we played vs a large New York state school,” said Athens coach Rich Pitts.
“Defensively, not giving up a goal in the run of play was huge as we head towards districts.
“We just need to go back and keep working on finishing,” added Pitts. “We had two great chances, and the goalkeeper stood on her head and made the saves.”
Lea Mozzali scored off a corner kick from Lilia Mack just 92 seconds into the second half to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Hayden Robertson converted a penalty kick with 12:05 left in the game to extend Corning’s lead to 2-0.
Corning had a 10-7 edge in shots-on-goal, and a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Senior Carmelita Pomaquiza recorded eight saves in net for the Wildcats.
Athens, now 10-4, returns to action Saturday morning when it hosts Bloomsburg.
