STAC BOYS SOCCER: WAVERLY BLANKS GROTON, 2-0, FOR SECOND WIN OF SEASON (2024-10-15)

Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY — Waverly scored a pair of first-half goals, and made them stand in a 2-0 win over Groton here Tuesday night in non-league boys soccer action.

“I am very pleased with how the team played tonight,” said Waverly coach Jon Rankin. “Our focus was our two seniors and doing everything we can to get them a goal.

“We set an early and aggressive tone by scoring early and did everything we could to keep the ball in their half.

“Everyone on the field played a good game. Our passing was better and our ball movement was good too,” he noted.

“Despite our possession, (keeper) Aiden (Doherty) bailed us out of a couple sticky situations, where we had some bad touches.

“And, Logan Roskow and Peyton Robinson did a fantastic job shutting down Groton’s over-the-top play,” added Rankin. “Overall, our defense was very solid.”

Freshman Jesse Lantz scored an unassisted goal seven minutes into the game to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.

Ten minutes later, Andrew Larrabee, off a feed from junior Porter Daddona, scored to make it 2-0.

Waverly had a 13-6 advantage in shots-on-goal, while Groton had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.

Aiden Doherty recorded five saves in net for the Wolverines.

Waverly, now 2-13, wraps up the 2024 campaign Wednesday at Groton.
