NTL GIRLS SOCCER: TROY PUT GAME AWAY WITH THREE LATE GOALS; BLANKS ATHENS, 4-0 (19 PHOTOS) (2024-10-16)
Valley Sports Report ATHENS — Troy scored three goals in less than five minutes late in the game to blow open a one-goal game on its way to a 4-0 win over Athens here Wednesday afternoon in NTL girls soccer action at Alumni Stadium.
“We stayed in the game for a while, then I changed formation and it backfired,” said Athens coach Rich Pitts. “The loss is totally on me, the girls played hard the whole game.”
Gianni Renzi scored the only goal of the first half for the Trojans.
Renzi scored an unassisted goal with 13:34 remaining in the contest to make it 2-0.
Alex McRoberts scored two goals in the next five minutes to extend the lead to 4-0.
Troy had a 14-9 advantage in shots-on-goal, while Athens had a 5-3 edge in corner kicks.
Senior Carmelita Pomaquiza recorded six saves in net for the Wildcats.
Athens, now 10-7 and on a five-game losing skein, wraps up the regular season Saturday at Central Mountain.
“We’re looking to finish strong on Saturday and prep for Districts,” said Pitts.
