Valley Sports Report
MILL HALL, Pa. — Athens scored three second-half goals to snap a five-game losing skid with a 3-1 win over Central Mountain here Saturday in non-league girls soccer action.

“It’s a great bounce back heading into districts,” said Athens coach Rich Pitts.

“The girls played good flowing soccer that we have worked on the last week,” he noted. “Really having patience in the final third that got us two quality goals, then we stretched them at the end and Abby Burgess got in behind and finished a beautiful ball.

“Defensively we were solid keeping the ball in front of us and controlling our end of the park,” added Pitts. “I’m happy to finish with a win and get on to district week.”

After being held scoreless for more than 51 minutes, Athens got on the board when junior Lizzie Gorsline cashed in a rebound. Sophomore Brinley Nichols was credited with an assist.

Less than three minutes later, sophomore Delanie Patton, off a feed from senior Addy Wheeler, found the back of the net from the 18.

With 5:45 remaining in the contest, junior Abby Burgess chased down a feed from Wheeler, and beat the Central Mountain keeper to make it 3-1.
