NTL JUNIOR HIGH FOOTBALL: ATHENS CLOSES OUT SEASON WITH WINS OVER SAYRE, NORTHWEST AREA (2024-10-24)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — Athens notched season-ending wins over Sayre and Northwest Area to close out the NTL junior high football season with a 4-3 record.
Athens 66, Sayre 16Sayre scored the first two TDs of the game, but the rest of the game was all Athens in a 66-16 win in the season finale for both teams.
Blake Zingeser scored a pair of TDs, and Trent Lynch added both two-point conversions to put the Redskins up 16-0.
Chase Gowin's 67-yard TD run, and Cy Yeager's run for conversion closed the gap to 16-8.
After Athens recovered a fumble on the next play, Johnny Butler scored on a 35-yard run, and Yeager scored again on the conversion to tie the game at 16-16.
On the next Athens possession, Yeager caught a pair of passes from Shea Davidson, the second a 4-yard TD pass. Eli Wayman tacked on the conversion to give the Wildcats a 24-16 lead.
Moments later, Athens' Iziah Bailey stepped in front of a Sayre pass for a pick-6 to up the lead to 30-16.
Sayre's next possession ended the same way, with Wayman picking off the pass, and taking it 45 yards to paydirt. Bailey added the two point conversion to make it 38-16.
After a Sayre punt, Gowin scored on a 30-yard run. Davidson's conversion run put Athens ahead 46-16.
The first half ended on a scoop-and-score of a Sayre fumble by Jayce Bowman. Butler's conversion run gave the Wildcats a 54-16 lead at the half.
Bowman capped a three-play scoring drive to start the second half, scoring on a 14-yard run to make it 60-16.
Bowman added his third TD of the game, a 13-yard run to provide the final margin.
Athens finishes the season with a 4-3 record.
Athens 36, Northwest 0Shea Davidson threw two TD passes, and the Wildcats scored on two interception returns in a 36-0 win over Northwest Area.
The Wildcats moved the ball into the Northwest red zone on its first possession, but the Rangers came up with an interception at its 12-yard line. Two plays later, Caleb Ide sacked the Northwest QB in the end zone for a safety to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
On the ensuing possession, Davidson's 44-yard scoring strike to Cy Yeager capped a quick three-play drive to put Athens up 8-0.
Northwest's next possession ended on a fumble, and four plays later, Davidson connected with Eli Wayman on a TD pass. Wayman also hauled in a conversion pass from Davidson to make it 16-0 at the half.
Johnny Butler scored on an 8-yard run early in the third quarter to make it 22-0.
On the Rangers next possession, Graham Steinfelt picked off a pass and raced 38 yards to paydirt to make it 30-0.
Yeager tacked on the final score, a 72-yard interception return by Yeager to make it 36-0.
Towanda 16, Athens 8Athens scored first, but Towanda rallied for a 16-8 win.
Shea Davidson connected with Cy Yeager on a 25-yard TD pass in the second quarter. Aiden Briggs added the conversion to make it 8-0.
Towanda answered with a scoring drive to make it 8-8 at the half, and added the game-winning score on its first possession of the third quarter.
Canton 16, Athens 12Canton raced out to a big lead early, and held on for a 16-12 win over Athens.
The Warriors scored on their first two possessions to take a 16-0 lead.
Athens forced a turnover on downs at its 25 late in the first half, and moments later Iziah Bailey hauled in a bubble screen from Shea Davidson and raced 75 yards for a score to close the gap to 16-6.
In the fourth quarter, Eli Wayman recovered a fumble at the Athens 45. The Wildcats put together a drive on the legs of Graham Steinfelt and Elliott Chilson, with Chilson capping the drive with a 3-yard TD run.
Athens' defense got the ball back, but Canton held on downs in the closing moments to preserve the win.
