SECTION IV FOOTBALL: GOOD, KEATHLEY POWER WAVERLY TO 48-0 ROUT OF LANSING (2024-10-25)
Valley Sports ReportLANSING — Senior Fletcher Good ran for four scores, and senior Kolsen Keathley added two rushing TDs as Waverly seized total control of its division title chase with a dominant 48-0 win over Lansing here Friday night in Section IV football action.
With the win, Waverly improves to 7-1 on the season, and 3-0 in the division. Lansing and Dryden are both 2-1, with their losses to Waverly.
"We pretty much locked up the division, so it's a big win," said Miller.
The Wolverines, ranked No. 1 in the state, ran the ball 31 times for 295 yards, and added 101 yards through the air, while the Bobcats managed just 73 yards (33 rushing and 40 passing) in total offense.
"The guys did a great job up front," said Waverly coach Jason Miller. "We just dominated (Lansing) up front.
"Fletcher (Good) and Kolsen (Keathley), who played a little bit at tailback, ran really well.
"And Ben (Shaw) had another very efficient day throwing the ball," added Miller. "He just made throws for some key first downs."
Defensively, the Wolverines shut down Lansing's talented dual-threat QB Jaxson Mayo, who ran the ball five times for 24 yards, and completed 4 of 9 passes for 31 yards and one interception.
"We focused on stopping their quarterback (Jaxson Mayo), and did a real good job of that," said Miller.
The Wolverines opened the game with a 5 1/2-minute scoring drive, capped by a 1-yard TD run by Good with 6:30 remaining in the first quarter
"We got off a to a real quick start on offense, and had a good sustained drive to start things off," said Miller.
Waverly got the ball back quickly, and Good found paydirt on a 22-yard run with 2:40 remaining in the first quarter. Junior Hogan Shaw's second PAT kick of the game made it 14-0.
Good made it 20-0 with a 4-yard TD run on the first play of the second quarter.
After a first down, Lansing punted the ball, and Waverly junior Daltton Davis returned it 71 yards for a score with 7:59 remaining in the half. Hogan Shaw's PAT made it 27-0.
Waverly forced another Lansing punt, and on the Wolverines' first play, Keathley ripped off a 76-yard TD run with 4:44 left in the half. Hogan Shaw's PAT made it 34-0.
Good added a 16-yard TD run with 1 minute left in the half, and Hogan Shaw's PAT kick made it 41-0 at the half.
Keathley's 16-yard TD run midway through the scoring, and Hogan Shaw's point-after kick provided the final margin.
Keathley led Waverly with 106 yards and two TDs on just three carries, while Good had 100 yards and four TDs on 12 carries, and freshman Bryce LaForest added 83 yards on 12 carries,
Ben Shaw, who had his string of 20 consecutive completions end with his first throw of the game, completed his next eight pass attempts, and finished the game 9-for-11 for 96 yards.
Senior Xavier Watson led the Wolverines with five grabs for 68 yards, and Keathley added two catches for 15 yards.
Waverly wraps up the regular season next Friday at home against Whitney Point.
