DISTRICT 4 FOOTBALL: TOP-SEEDED SHAMOKIN ROLLS OVER ATHENS IN CLASS 4A SEMIS (16 Photos) (2024-11-01)
Valley Sports ReportSHAMOKIN — Athens fell to top-seed Shamokin, 50-7, in a District 4, Class 4A football semi-final match-up here Friday night.
The Wildcats couldn’t gain offensive traction during the contest, with just 55 total yards and three firsts downs, though their defense played well enough to keep them in the game until late in the first half.
Senior Keegan Congdon spoiled the Indians’ shutout attempt, ripping the ball from the running back and returning it 85 yards down the left side of the field to paydirt with 5.3 seconds remaining in the game. Zach Fisher added the point-after for the 50-7 final.
Shamokin scored on its opening drive on a Jayce Ginck 1-yard run, but Athens turned them over on downs during their second drive thanks to a big-time stop by Ethan Elliott.
The Wildcats, though, would be forced to punt on their ensuing drive.
Shamokin would chip its way down the field on its third drive, converting three first downs, including the scoring play, a 9-yard pass by Logan Steele to Jenssyn Shuey. The point-after was no good but it was 13-0 Indians after one.
Athens was pinned deep by its goal line to start its third drive, and didn’t get far before punting.
Despite a short field, the Wildcat defense held Shamokin to a 30-yard field goal by Chase Pensyl with 8:57 left to play in the half.
Down 16-0, Athens’ offense came alive, beginning with a 25-yard run by Davidson, where he reversed fields twice before finding a seam.
Three plays later, on third-and-10, he hit Connor Garrison for an over-the-shoulder catch in traffic for a 36-yard pick up to the Shamokin 20-yard line.
That’s where it stopped though, as Davidson was picked off by Shamokin’s Andre Bell two plays later.
The Indians went down the field, scoring on a Steele 9-yard run, then added another touchdown late, a 3-yard run from Ginck, to make it 29-0 at the half.
They got three more TDs in the second half - a 54-yard Pensyl run, a 77-yard hook up from Steele to Pensyl, and a 13-yard Ryan Bickert run.
Congdon’s late score ended the scoring in the game.
Davidson was 2-for-16 for 36-yards with the interception for Athens, and he victimized by several drops.
Brendan Cooke led the team in rushing with six carries for 14 yards.
Steele went 9-for-16 for 149-yards and two scores, while also rushing for 37 yards on five carries. Ginck had 11 carries for 44 yards and two touchdowns, while Zakem Clinton had 12 carries for 81 yards.
Athens wraps up the 2024 campaign with a 5-6 record.
