Tyler Roe, a freshman at Stevens Institute wrestling team, won his first four collegiate matches, including a victory over the top seed, on his way to a fourth-place finish here Saturday at the Ned McGinley Invitational, hosted by King's College.
Roe, who was unseeded at 149 pounds, used a pair of takedowns to forge a 6-1 win over Giovani Gioio of Castleton in the opening round.
In the round-of-32, Roe scored a pair of takedowns and four near-fall points to lead Hunter College's Justin Riello, 10-1, after the first period. Roe hit a six-point move to finish off a 16-1 tech fall at 3:50.
In the round-of-16, Roe trailed fourth-seeded Hunter Ballantine of Shenandoah, 7-4, with 91 seconds remaining in the third period, but scored a pair takedowns in 9 seconds to take a 10-8 lead. After Ballantine escaped with 1:01 remaining, Roe hit a seven-point move to seal a wild 17-9 win.
In the quarterfinals, Roe faced top-seeded Vincenzo Napolitano of New York University, and erased a 4-0 deficit with a seven-point move midway through the third period on his way to a 10-6 win.
Roe's run ended in the semifinals with a wild 15-12 loss to NYU's John Marino. Roe led 9-3 at the end of the first period, thanks to a trio of takedowns, but Mariano hit a seven-point move late in the second period to tie the bout at 10-10, then scored a takedown in the third period to seal the win.
In the third-place match, third-seeded Shane Kibler of King's College scored three takedowns, and limited Roe to four escapes in an 11-4 win.
Stevens Institute returns to action Friday in its opening dual of the season against Delaware Valley University, then competes in the Racich Rumble at Collegeville, Pa. Saturday.
