SECTION IV GIRLS SWIMMING: WAVERLY WINS SIX EVENTS, BREAKS SCHOOL AND POOL RECORDS IN SECOND-PLACE FINISH AT CLASS B CHAMPIONSHIPS (24 PHOTOS) (2024-11-10)

Valley Sports Report
ENDWELL — Waverly won six events, including all three relays, and set a number of school and pool records here Saturday afternoon, finishing second at the Section IV, Class B Swimming & Diving Championships.

The Wolverines also had three runner-up finishes, and a pair of third-place finishes to amass 352 points with just 12 girls on its roster. Maine-Endwell won the team title with 388 points, while Oneonta was third with 335 points, and Owego was fourth with 252.5 points.

"Our team of 12 is small, but mighty - placing second behind Maine Endwell's roster of 27 is impressive," said Waverly coach Amy Steck.

"They deserved every time and place they earned," she noted.

"We've had five qualify for States, and now need to carry the momentum forward as we continue to chase goals," added Steck. "Proud doesn't even touch the surface — this is an incredible team of talented young ladies."

Junior Mira Kittle has qualified for the State meet in the 50-yard freestyle, the 100-yard butterfly, and 100-yard backstroke.

Kittle also qualified in the 200-yard medley relay with junior Olivia Cheresnowsky, 8th-grader Natalie Steck, and freshman Lauryn Welles, and the 200-yard freestyle relay with Cheresnowsky, Welles, and 8th-grader Megan Atanasoff.

On Saturday, Kittle, Cheresnowsky, Welles and Steck won the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:51.05, setting a new pool record. They eclipsed the mark set by M-E in 2020, and are now 12th in Section IV history.

Kittle, Cheresnowsky, Atanasoff, and 8th-grader Audrey Kellogg won the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:48.0.

Kittle won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 23.61 seconds, eclipsing the former M-E pool record of 24.28 seconds set by Corning's Angie McKane in 2021.

Atanasoff was second in the 50 free with a personal-best time of 24.99 seconds, and 8th-grader Ayla Wheeler was sixth in a personal-best time of 27.67 seconds.

Kittle also won the 100-yard backstroke in a school-record and M-E pool record time of 56.79 seconds, while Cheresnowsky was second in 1:02.03, and Twedt was 11th in a personal-best time of 1:12.72.

Kellogg, Welles, Wheeler, and Atanasoff won the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:40.3, which is No. 3 in program history. Kellogg swam a personal-best time of 25.81, which is No. 7 all-time at Waverly, in the lead-off leg.

Welles won the 100-yard freestyle in a personal-best time of 55.83 seconds, while Kellogg was second at 56.7 seconds, Atanasoff was third at 57.0 seconds, and Wheeler was eighth in 1:01.39.

Steck finished third in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:12.92, and Welles was fourth in 1:13.25.
