COLLEGE WRESTLING: TIOGA GRAD BELLIS PLACES SIXTH AT PRINCETON OPEN IN COLLEGIATE DEBUT (2024-11-11)
Valley Sports ReportPRINCETON, N.J. — Tioga grad Caden Bellis, a freshman at Division I University of Penn, won his first collegiate match, and placed sixth at the Princeton Open here last weekend at the Jadwin Gymnasium.
Bellis, wrestling with the Penn Regional Training Center club team, opened with a 13-5 major decision over Columbia's Jaden Le in the round-of-16.
Bellis scored takedowns in each of the first two periods to take a 6-1 lead heading into the final two minutes. Lee scored a takedown in the third period to close the gap 7-4, but a reversal, a takedown, and a riding-time point provided the final margin.
In the quarterfinals, Lehigh's Rozynski scored a takedown midway through the second period, and held off Bellis for a 4-2 win.
Bellis bounced back with a pair of wins in the consolation bracket.
He opened wrestle backs with a 12-6 decision over Columbia's Jake Wacha.
Bellis scored an escape and a takedown in the first period but Wacha duplicated his feat early in the second period to tie the bout at 4-4.
Bellis answered Wacha's takedown with a quick escape, and another takedown to take an 8-4 lead, but Wacha escaped with 1 second remaining in the second period to trim the deficit to 8-5.
Wacha cut Bellis loose to start the second period, but Bellis sealed the win with a takedown with 42 seconds remaining.
In the blood round, Bellis scored a 5-1 decision over West Point's Micah Hanau. A second-period takedown was the big blow in the win.
In the fifth-place match, Bellis dropped an 8-1 decision to West Point's Dakota Morris, who forged the win with takedowns in the first and third periods.
