Valley Sports ReportWASHINGTON, D.C. — Tioga grads
Gianni Silvestri and
John Worthing notched wins for Clarion, but American University pulled out a 19-18 decision here Sunday evening in non-league NCAA Division I wrestling action.
Silvestri, a freshman starting in place of injured redshirt senior Ryan Sullivan, gave up a first-period takedown, but answered with a reversal, a takedown and more than 2 minutes of riding time to post a 7-5 decision over Cael McIntyre.
Silvestri's win put the Golden Eagles on the board, and closed the gap to 6-3.
At 174 pounds, Worthing came up on top in a wild flurry in the opening minute of the first period, and ending up turning a half into a pin at 2:44.
American's Caleb Campos got in on a quick shot in the opening seconds of the match, and hooked a cradle on Worthing, but was unable to score a takedown before Worthing worked his way out-of-bounds.
After the re-start, Campos got in on Worthing's leg again, but Worthing was able to get control for a takedown, then used a half to turn Campos for an 8-0 lead.
Moments later, Worthing ran another half for the fall to trim American's lead to 13-12.
American scored a fall at 197 to take a 19-15 lead, before Clarion's heavyweight Austin Chapman closed the match with a 4-2 win.
