Scott Woodring, a grad student at Mansfield University, and his Division II Mountaineer teammates stepped up a level in competition to take on Division I St. Bonaventure Wednesday night, and dropped a 76-54 decision.
Mansfield played tough for 25 minutes, trailing 20-19 with 8:49 remaining in the first half, and 28-24 with 4:29 left in the opening 20 minutes.
The Bonnies led 36-30 at the half, and 40-34 about two minutes into the half, before a 14-4 run stretched the lead to 54-38 with 11:50 remaining in the contest.
Mansfield never got closer than 12 points the remainder of the game.
Woodring had five points, two rebounds, and two blocks in 24 minutes against St. Bonaventure's much bigger back line.
On Saturday, the Mountaineers notched their first win of the season in a 68-66 thriller over D'Youville.
Woodring scored the game-winner with 2:47 remaining in the contest.
He finished the game with nine points, seven rebounds, one block, and one steal.
On the season, Woodring is averaging 9 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 1 steal per game. In five games, he has four blocked shots, two assists, and two 3-pointers.
Mansfield, now 1-4, travels to Clarion Friday, and Pitt-Johnstown Saturday.
