NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: DESPITE FAST START, ATHENS FALLS TO JOHNSON CITY IN SEASON-OPENER (20 PHOTOS) (2024-12-04)

ATHENS — Athens got off to a fast start, but struggled offensively over the final three quarters in a 44-23 season-opening loss to Johnson City here Wednesday night in non-league girls basketball action.

Sophomores McKenna Jarvis and Allie Kemp scored four points apiece in the first quarter to help the Wildcats to a 12-7 lead, but Athens scored just 11 points the remainder of the game.

Johnson City took control in the second quarter with a 15-2 blitz to take a 22-14 lead into the halftime intermission.

JC stretched its lead with a 13-3 run in the third quarter to take a 35-17 lead into the final eight minutes.

Jarvis led Athens with eight points, while senior Addy Wheeler added six points, five rebounds, and three blocked shots, Kemp chipped in with four points, and senior Sara Bronson contributed three rebounds, two assists, and two steals.

Antonia Monico led Johnson City with 14 points, including four 3-pointers.

Athens returns to action Monday when it hosts Notre Dame.
