NTL WRESTLING: FAST START CARRIES ATHENS TO 45-30 WIN OVER WILLIAMSON IN SEASON-OPENING DUAL (22 PHOTOS) (2024-12-10)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — Athens raced out to a 33-0 lead with three falls and three technical falls in the first six bouts on the way to a 45-30 win over Williamson in the first dual of the NTL wrestling season.
Sophomore Zaine Campbell started the Wildcats off quickly with a 23-5 technical fall over Karter Osgood.
Campbell scored four takedowns in the first period, with a four-point near-fall for a 16-4 lead after the first two minutes. He finished off the match with a reversal and five near-fall points early in the second period.
Sophomore Lucas Persun also posted a dominating technical fall, scoring an 18-3 win over Clayton Webster at 127 pounds.
At 133 pounds, Persun scored a pair of takedowns, and six near-fall points to take a 12-1 lead after the first two minutes. Persun finished off the bout with a pair of quick takedowns in the second period.
Junior Karson Sipley turned a quick takedown in a 57-second fall over Kohen Flynn at 139 pounds to give the Wildcats a 16-0 lead.
At 145 pounds, junior Sean Peters scored an early takedown, and then a pin of Lhandyn Nauman at 1:25 to push the lead to 22-0.
Freshman Trenton Barrett gave up an early takedown, but stormed back to win a 27-12 technical fall over Anthony Baker at 152 pounds.
Trailing 3-1, Barrett scored a pair of takedowns for a 7-5 lead after the first two minutes. Barrett scored four more takedowns in the second period, and led 19-8 heading into the final two minutes.
Sophomore Brendan Cooke closed out the Wildcats' run at 160 pounds with a pin of Steven Olsen in 3:15.
Cooke gave up an early takedown, but registered a reversal, and trailed 3-2 after the first period. Cooke took a 6-3 lead with an escape and takedown, which he turned into a fall.
Jeremy Fuhrer put the Warriors on the board with a pin at 172 pounds, but sophomore Connor Davidson answered with a pin of Tim Freeman in 3:14 at 189 pounds to make it 39-6.
Davidson gave up an early takedown, but hit a seven-point move to take an 8-3 lead after the first period. Davidson scored another takedown in the second period, and turned it into a fall.
Williamson's Ben Freeman notched a pin at 215 pounds, but senior Caleb Nason answered with the Wildcats' final win of the night at 285 pounds, a pin of Luke Sottolano at 2:55.
The Warriors picked up forfeits at 106 and 114 pounds, and won via injury default at 121 pounds to provide the final margin.
Athens returns to action this weekend at the Panther Holiday Classic at Mount Aloysius College.
