NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: ATHENS FALLS TO NORWICH IN OPENING ROUND OF WOITACH TIP-OFF TOURNEY (24 PHOTOS) (2024-12-13)
Valley Sports ReportJOHNSON CITY — Norwich used a big second quarter to open up a 19-point halftime lead on its way to a 70-47 win over Athens here Friday night in the opening round of the Mark Woitach Tip-Off Tournament.
Norwich started quickly and jumped out to a 19-12 lead after the first eight minutes, despite junior Adam Kemp's eight points, which included a pair of 3-pointers.
The Purple Tornadoes stretched out its lead with a 19-7 second-quarter blitz.
The Wildcats closed the gap in the third quarter with an 18-11. Senior Jase Babcock and junior Nick Grazul scored five points apiece in the stanza.
Norwich blew the game wide open with a 21-10 blitz in the fourth quarter.
Kemp led Athens with 14 points, including four 3-pointers, while Babcock scored 10 points, Grazul and senior Peter Jones added five points apiece, and junior James Friend and sophomore Lucas Schultz chipped in with four points each.
Steven Donagle led Norwich with 25 points and Mitchell Collins added 14 markers.
Athens, now 1-2, will face Johnson City, which dropped a 72-68 decision to Newfield, in the consolation game Saturday at 1:45 p.m.
