JOHNSON CITY — Athens bounced back from an opening-round loss to Norwich to beat Newfield in the consolation game of the junior varsity boys Mark Woitach Tip-Off Tournament here over the weekend.

Athens returns to action tonight when it hosts Cowanesque Valley.

Norwich 60, Athens 54
Norwich used a strong fourth quarter to pull out a 60-54 win over Athens in the opening round Friday night.

Dom Robbins scored eight points in the first quarter for the Wildcats, and Eli Hobday scored five points, including a 3-pointer, but Norwich jumped out to a 20-15 lead.

Athens turned up the defense in the second quarter, and outscored Norwich, 11-6, to tie the game at 26-26 at the half.

Hobday caught fire in the third quarter, knocking down five 3-pointers, but Athens was only able to outscore Norwich 17-16 to take a 43-42 lead into the fourth quarter.

Norwich pumped in 18 points in the fourth quarter to offset a pair of 3-pointers by Gage Marmor in an 18-11 run. Athens made just 3 of 8 free throws in the closing stanza.

Hobday led Athens with 20 points, including six 3-pointers, while Robbins scored 11 points, Marmor added nine points, and Kam Wheeler chipped in with six points.

Gavin Burrell led a balanced Norwich offense with 12 points.

Consolation Game
Athens 49, Newfield 28

Athens got off to a quick start and cruised to a 49-28 win over Newfield Saturday in the consolation game.

Dom Robbins scored six points, while Kam Wheeler and Aiden Vanderpool each scored four pointers, and Liam Sites canned a 3-pointer to help Athens to a 17-9 lead after the opening stanza.

Landon Roberts scored four points in the second quarter, and Wheeler knocked down his second 3-pointer of the game in a 9-7 Athens run that extended the lead to 26-16 at the half.

Robbins scored eight more points in the third quarter, and Hobday drained a 3-pointer and scored five points as Athens outscored Newfield 14-12 to take a 40-28 lead in the closing stanza.

Athens closed the game with a 9-0 run.

Wheeler led Athens with 17 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, while Robbins scored nine points, Hobday added five points, and Roberts and Vanderpool chipped in with four points apiece.

Jason McCoy led Newfield with 14 points.
