STAC JV BOYS BASKETBALL: ITHACA RIDES STRONG SECOND HALF TO 72-46 WIN OVER WAVERLY (2024-12-17)
Valley Sports ReportITHACA — Ithaca used a big third quarter to break open a three-point game on its way to a 72-46 win over Waverly here Monday night in STAC junior varsity boys basketball action.
"I thought we played a great first half with Ithaca," said Waverly coach Michael Croft. "We were tied at the end of the first quarter, and down three at half, despite missing a ton of free throws."
"We had to gamble a bit in fourth quarter to try and cut into the lead and (Ithaca) hit shots.
"Anyone who was at the game, the final score doesn’t truly reflect on how close the game was," added Croft.
Jack Pipher and Braiden Judson scored five points apiece, each with a 3-pointer, to help Waverly to a 12-12 tie at the end of the first quarter.
Ithaca used a 13-10 spurt in the second quarter to take a 25-22 lead at the half, then outscored Waverly, 23-10, in the third quarter to up the lead to 48-32 entering the fourth quarter.
Ithaca closed the game with a 24-14 run to provide the final margin.
Ithaca made 21 of 24 attempts from the free-throw line, while Waverly converted just 5 of 15.
Pipher led Waverly with 18 points, four rebounds, and two assists, while Sam Cheresnowsky had 11 points and two assists, and Collin Wheeler added eight points and two assists.
Judson chipped in with seven points, three steals, and two assists, while Chase Wheeler hauled down five rebounds, and Eric Lewis and Rylan Larson each added three rebounds.
Waverly returns to action Saturday at Chenango Valley.
