SAYRE — Athens started a bit slow, but found its groove, thanks in large part to a triple-double by senior Addy Wheeler, and cruised to a 51-15 win over Sayre here Friday night in the consolation game of the annual Valley Christmas Girls Basketball Tournament.

"It was a good team effort," said Athens coach Kelly Burkhart. "We played solid team defense."

Sophomore Addy Wheeler scored five pints, and freshman Allison Kemp knocked down a 3-pointer as the Wildcats took an 8-4 lead after the first eight minutes.

In the second quarter, Wheeler canned a pair of 3-pointers, and senior Sara Bronson also scored six points to fuel a 14-2 blitz that put Athens up 22-6 at the half.

Sophomore McKenna Jarvis scored eight points in the third quarter, while Wheeler scored six, and Kemp added a 3-pointer in a 19-3 run that extended the Wildcat lead to 41-9 heading into the final eight minutes.

Kemp and fellow freshman Alissa Vough each canned 3-pointers, and Wheeler scored four points in a game-closing 10-6 spurt.

Wheeler led Athens with 21 points, 13 rebounds, and 16 steals, to go along with three assists.

Jarvis had 10 points and three rebounds for the Wildcats, while Kemp had nine points on a trio of 3-pointers, Bronson added six points and six rebounds Vough chipped in with five points and four rebounds, and senior Kelsie Noel grabbed three boards.

Junior Rylee Lantz led Sayre with six points, 11 rebounds, three steals, and two blocked shots, while junior Liz Hunter had four points, five rebounds, and three steals, senior Abbie McGaughey added five rebounds, and three blocked shots, and senior Morgan Hickey and freshman Reaghan McGaughey each pulled down four rebounds.

Athens, now 4-2, hosts Towanda Jan. 3, while Sayre (1-5) hosts Cowanesque Valleys on Jan. 8.
