H.S. WRESTLING: WAVERLY CROWNS FIVE CHAMPS; WIN TEAM TITLE AT CORDELL ROTARY TOURNAMENT (2025-01-04)

ONEONTA — Waverly crowned five champions, and have four more wrestlers reach the podium on its way to a convincing team title here Saturday at the Oneonta Rotary-Ross Cordell Tournament.

Eighth-grader Avery Bowman, who also won the "Sportsmanship Award," freshman Drayton DeKay, juniors Daltton Davis and Cooper Robinson, and sophomore Matthias Welles each reached the top step of the podium, while senior Troy Beeman finished second, sophomore Rhylee Stotler and junior Caden Bradley each placed third, and sophomore Parker Larson finished fourth for the Wolverines.

Waverly ran away with the team title, amassing 219 points, while runner-up Sherburne-Earlville had 165 points, third-place Carthage had 152.5 points, fourth-place Unatego-Unadilla Valley had 150 points, and fifth-place Elmira tallied 128.5 points.

Bowman, the fourth seed, decked fifth-seeded Kyle Crudele of Burnt Hills in 2:42 in the quarterfinals, then pinned top-seeded Jackson Moore of Sherburne-Earlville in 3:18 in the semifinals.

In the finals, Bowman pinned second-seeded Max Pelcer of Cooperstown in 3:55.

DeKay, the third seed, was 4-0 — all via falls, including three first-period pins, to win the 124-pound title.

DeKay decked Susquehanna Valley's Tristan Farley in 67 seconds, then scored a tech fall of sixth-seeded Max Koffer of Cooperstown in 2:48 in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, DeKay scored a technical fall of Duanesburg's Wyatt Rock, the seventh seed, in 5:11.

In the finals, DeKay pinned fourth-seeded Santiago Chrisjohn of Saugerties in 1:20.

Davis, the ninth seed, went 4-0 to win the 138-pound title.

Davis opened his day with a 22-6 technical fall of eighth-seeded Davis Barnard of BGAH, then scored an 8-2 win over top-seeded Louden Elliott of Carthage in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Davis topped Unatego-Unadilla Valley's fourth-seeded Ahmet Zaggout, 8-3.

In the finals, Davis forged a 13-7 win over seventh-seeded Lavonte Gibbons of Elmira.

Robinson, the third seed, went 3-0 to win the 152-pound title.

Robinson opened the gay with a technical fall of Burnt Hills' Duncan Vanwely in 1:11 in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Robinson forged a 10-3 win over Unatego-Unadilla Valley's Abdeen Zaggout, who is the top-ranked 152-pounder in Section IV.

In the finals, Robinson pinned top-seeded Jacob Schweigard of Duanesburg in 5:46.

Welles, the second seed, went 3-0 to win the 215-pound title.

Welles started his day with a pin of Carthage's Zach Pettitt in 2:42 in the quarterfinals, then flattened third-seeded Burnt Hills' Julian Goss in 34 seconds.

In the finals, Welles decked BGAH's fourth-seeded Elliott Briggs in 61 seconds.

Senior Troy Beeman, the top seed, to finish second in the 285-pound bracket.

Beeman pinned Susquehanna Valley's Trey Parker in 5:50 in the quarterfinals, then edged fourth-seeded Sam St. Peter of Monument Mountain (Mass.), 5-3, in the semifinals.

Beeman dropped an 8-3 decision to third-seeded Kam Dorchester of Carthage in the finals.

Stotler, the second seed, was 3-1 to finish third at 116 pounds.

Stotler opened with a 42-second pin of Oneonta's Marshall Maher in the quarterfinals, then dropped a 9-8 decision to third-seeded Peyton Hubbard of Chenango Forks in the semifinals.

In the consolation semifinals, Stotler forged a 15-3 major decision of Sherburne-Earlville's Aiden Shreve, then pinned Maher again in the third-place match, this time in 58 seconds.

Bradley went 4-1 to place third at 131 pounds.

Bradley, the fourth seed, opened with a 7-1 win over Sherburne-Earlville's Noah Ackerman, then scored a 12-2 major decision over Oneonta's Amari Champion in the quarterfinals.

In the semifinals, Bradley lost via third-period fall to top-seeded Gavin Nordberg of Unatego-Unadilla Valley.

In the consolation semifinals, Bradley scored a 3-0 win over Elmira's Ben Guyette. He pinned Duanesburg's second-seeded Carson Killenberger in 2:51 in the third-place match.

Larson, the 10th seed, was 3-2 to finish fourth in the 160-pound bracket.

Larson pinned Sherburne-Earlville's Cody Clarkson in 5:51 in the opening round, then scored a 17-2 technical fall win over second-seeded Lukas Forohuar.

In the semifinals, third-seeded Tyler Ritter of Chenango Forks  pinned Larson in 5:25.

Larson bounced back in the consolation semifinals with a pin of Carthage's Nathan Countryman in 2:25.

In the third-place match, Larson lost via second-period fall to Walton-Delhi's Travis Houck.

Junior Joey Mack lost in blood round of the 145-pound bracket.

Mack opened his day with a pin of Elmira's Tucker Burnett, the eighth seed, in 1:40 in the round-of-16, but lost via first-period fall to top-seeded Ryan Munn of Carthage in the quarterfinals.

Mack bounced back in wrestlebacks with a 10-8 win over Cooperstown's Tom Geertgens, but lost via second-period fall to Collin Trotter of Susquehanna Valley in the blood round.

Junior Brance VanDyke was 1-2 at 145 pounds, with his lone win a 17-second fall.

Senior Riley Pipher was 0-2 at 170 pounds.

Waverly has a busy week ahead with a home dual against Chenango Valley Tuesday, and a match Thursday against Tioga at the Lecom Center in Elmira. The Wolverines will also compete this weekend at the Southern Tier Memorial.
