THE WEEK AHEAD: WRESTLING TAKES CENTER STAGE IN FIRST FULL WEEK OF 2025 (2025-01-05)
Valley Sports ReportTHE VALLEY — Wrestling takes center stage this week, with Athens-Canton, and Tioga-Newark Valley, and Tioga-Waverly the key duals, and the week ending with the Southern Tier Memorial at the LeCom Center in Elmira.
There are 32 events on the docket this week, including nine on Tuesday, and six on Thursday.
The following are all of the home varsity events this week, and a few of the notable road events:
MONDAY (3)• The Waverly bowlers host Owego in the their first action of 2025.
TUESDAY (9)• The Waverly wrestlers christen their new gym with a dual against STAC rival Chenango Forks.
• Athens hosts North Penn-Mansfield in an NTL Large School boys hoop contest.
• Tioga hosts IAC Small School power Newfield on the basketball hardwoods.
• Athens hosts Wellsboro in NTL swimming action.
WEDNESDAY (5)• Tioga wrestling is on the road for a key IAC dual at Newark Valley.
• The Sayre girls host NTL Small School basketball rival Cowanesque Valley.
• The Waverly girls host STAC basketball rival Chenango Forks.
• Waverly hosts STAC rival Chenango Valley on the lanes at the Valley Bowling Center.
THURSDAY (6)• Waverly and Tioga tangle in a non-league wrestling dual at the LeCom Center in Elmira.
• Athens hosts NTL rival Troy on the wrestling mats.
FRIDAY (4)• Athens, Sayre, Tioga, and Waverly are among the teams in action this weekend at the boys portion of the Southern Tier Memorial Wrestling Tournament at the LeCom Center in Elmira.
• The Sayre girls hosts NEB in a Small School basketball match-up.
SATURDAY (5)• Athens hosts NTL Large School girls basketball power Troy.
• The Tioga and Waverly girls are in the field at the Southern Tier Memorial at the LeCom Center in Elmira.
• The Waverly boys host Whitney Point in a non-league basketball contest.
• Waverly hosts its annual boys swimming & diving invitational.
