WAVERLY — Waverly rallied from an early deficit to post the first win ever in the new gym, a 38-23 decision over Sidney here Saturday afternoon in non-league junior varsity girls basketball action.

Sidney jumped out to an 8-7 lead after the first quarter, thanks in large part to Waverly making just 1 of 6 free-throw attempts.

Taylin Gonzalez, who had four points in the first quarter, knocked down a 3-pointer and scored five points in the second quarter, to spark a 10-6 run that gave the Wolverines a 17-14 lead at the half.

Kezlyn DeKay scored six points in the third quarter, and Gonzalez added five more points, including another 3-pointer, in an 11-5 run that put the Wolverines up 28-19 heading into the final seven minutes.

Waverly had five different players find the scoring column in a game-closing 10-4 run that iced the win.

Gonzalez led Waverly with 16 points, while DeKay scored 10, and Gianna Soprano added four.

Madison Paul and Malala Stanton led Sidney with six points apiece.

Waverly returns to action Tuesday at Chenango Forks.
