NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: COLD-SHOOTING SECOND QUARTER DOOMS ATHENS IN 62-35 LOSS TO NP-MANSFIELD (13 PHOTOS) (2025-01-07)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — Athens played a strong eight minutes to start the game, then went stone cold in a decisive second quarter in a 62-35 loss to North Penn-Mansfield here Tuesday night in NTL Large School Division boys basketball action.
Sophomore Lucas Schultz and senior Jase Babcock scored four points apiece in the first quarter to help the Wildcats to a 14-13 lead after the opening stanza.
In the second quarter, Babcock had the only field for the Wildcats, who went 0-for-4 at the free-throw line, but Cooper Shaw knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and scored 10 points to fuel a 21-2 blitz for the Tigers, who took a 34-16 lead into the halftime intermission.
Schultz knocked down a 3-pointer and scored five points in the third quarter, but NP-M used a 17-9 run to extend its lead to 51-25 heading into the final eight minutes.
Junior Talon Baglini led Athens with 10 points, while Schultz scored nine points, Babcock added six points, and sophomore Kam Wheeler chipped in with five points.
Shaw led NP-M with 18 points, including four 3-pointers.
Athens, now 2-8, returns to action Thursday at Troy.
