NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: COWANESQUE VALLEY RIDES FAST START TO 64-21 WIN OVER SAYRE (21 PHOTOS) (2025-01-08)

SAYRE — Cowanesque Valley scored the first 13 points of the game, then used a 19-0 blitz that bridge the first two quarters to blow the game open early on its way to a 64-21 win over Sayre here Wednesday night in NTL Small SChool Division girls basketball action.

Ella Churchill and Ashley Woodring, who combined to score 50 points in the game, scored the first 13 points of the game, but a fast-break lay-up by Liz Hunter put Sayre on the board with 3:20 remaining in the first quarter, and triggered a 7-2 spurt that closed the gap to 15-7.

The Indians then reeled off 19 straight points to take a 34-7 lead with 2 1/2 minutes remaining in the half.

CV led 41-12 at the half, thanks in large part to Churchill and Woodring, who scored 16 and 14 points, respectively, in the first half.

The duo scored all 14 of CV's points in the third quarter in a 14-6 run that extended the Indians' lead to 55-18 heading into the final eight minutes.

Senior Abbie McGaughey led Sayre with seven points and seven rebounds, while freshman McKenna Parrish scored seven points, and junior Rylee Lantz had five points, five rebounds, and one blocked shot.

Hunter had three rebounds, three assists, two steals, and one blocked shot for the Redskins.

Churchill pumped in 28 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, and Woodring scored 22 points for the Indians.

Sayre, now 1-8, hosts NEB Friday night.
