H.S. WRESTLING: WELLES, ROBINSON, BEEMAN LEAD WAVERLY TO FIFTH-PLACE FINISH AT SOUTHERN TIER MEMORIAL (24 PHOTOS) (2025-01-11)
Valley Sports ReportELMIRA — Sophomore Matthias Welles and junior Cooper Robinson each placed second, and junior Troy Beeman wrestled back for third place to lead Waverly to a fifth-place team finish in the 38-team field here Saturday at the third annual Southern Tier Memorial at the LeCom Events Center.
Sophomore Rhylee Stotler finished fifth, while 8th-grader Avery Bowman placed seventh, and junior Caden Bradley was an eighth-place finisher.
Chambersburg (Pa.) won the team title with 193 points, edging runner-up Bellefonte Area (Pa.) by 3.5 points. Penns Valley (Pa.) was third with 167 points, St. Anthony's was fourth with 137.5 points, and Waverly tallied 135 points. Tioga finished 10th with 103.5 points, and Athens was 11th with 100 points.
Welles was 1-1 on Saturday to place second in the 215-pound weight class. He was 4-1 on the weekend.
Wells decked Chambersburg's Omar Henchey in 2:43 in the semifinals.
He suffered a season-ending leg injury in the finals and was forced to issue a medical forfeit to Canandaigua's Mason Depew.
Robinson was 1-1 on the day to place second in the 152-pound bracket. He was 4-1 on the weekend.
In the semifinals, Robinson scored a takedown in the opening seconds of overtime to pull out a 13-10 decision over Horseheads' Zach Schrage. Robinson led 9-2 after the second period.
In the finals, top-seeded Ezra Fisher of Bellefonte overcame an early Robinson takedown, and led 9-3 heading into the third period. Robinson scored a takedown in the final 10 seconds of the match to close the gap to 9-6.
Beeman was 4-0 Saturday to wrestle back for third place in the 285-pound bracket. He was 6-1 on the weekend.
After a 2-1 loss to Williamson's Luke Sottolano in the quarterfinals, thanks to a stalling point at the final buzzer, Beeman was much more aggressive Saturday.
Beeman opened the day with a 31-second pin of Ithaca's Germain Harris in the blood round, then pinned Tioga freshman Mark McCane in 2:19.
In the consolation semifinals, Beeman pinned Troy standout Reed Palmer in 3:19.
In the third-place match, Beeman earned a bit of redemption with an overtime takedown for a 4-1 win over Sottolano.
Stotler was 1-2 on Saturday to finish fifth in the 116-pound bracket. He was 4-2 on the weekend.
Stotler won three matches Friday to reach the semifinals, where he lost via pinfall in 3:14 to St. Anthony's Brett Crawford.
Stotler also lost a 19-7 major decision to Penn Valley's Conner Myers in the consolation finals.
In the fifth-place match, Stotler edged Horseheads' Tanner Knapp, 1-0.
Avery Bowman 2-1 on Saturday to finish seventh at 108 pounds. He was 4-2 on the weekend.
Bowman received a forfeit in the "blood round" Saturday morning, then lost a 20-4 technical fall to Chambersburg's Isaac Brambley.
In the seventh-place match, Bowman pinned Wyoming Area's Chase Wilhelm in 2:55.
Bradley was 1-2 on Saturday to finish eighth in the 131-pound bracket.
Bradley won via fall in 1:35 over Wyoming Area's Shane Emsley in the "blood round."
Bradley then lost via fall in 4:56 to Penns Valley's Tripp Watson, and was forced to injury forfeit in the seventh-place match.
Junior Daltton Davis dropped a 7-1 decision to Athens junior Karson Sipley in the "blood round" of the 138-pound bracket.
Sophomore Parker Larson dropped a 6-3 decision to Bellefonte's Gavin Lucas in the "blood round" of the 152-pound weight class.
