NTL GIRLS WRESTLING: ATHENS GOES 2-1 AT TOWANDA QUAD MEET (19 PHOTOS) (2025-01-14)
Valley Sports ReportTOWANDA — Athens won two of its three matches Saturday here at the Towanda Quad meet, topping Mifflinburg and the Black Knights, while falling to a strong Western Wayne squad.
Western Wayne 42, Athens 27Athens opened up with three straight wins and a 15-0 lead, but Western Wayne won seven of the final nine matches in a come-from-behind, 42-27, win.
Sophomore Abigail Wagner gave the Wildcats a quick 6-0 lead with a 33-second fall at 170 pounds, and junior Haily Young made it 12-0 with a second-period fall at 190.
There was not match at 235 pounds, and freshman Alyssa Rinebold scored a 9-7 decision over Myla Smith at 100 pounds to give Athens a 15-0 advantage.
WW won the next five weight classes, with a forfeit at 106 to kick it off, and four consecutive falls to take a 30-15 lead.
Junior Hanna Rathbun stopped the bleeding with a pin of Sophie Mackulin in 1:16 at 136 pounds, and freshman Memphis Paul pulled the Wildcats within three points, at 30-27, with a pin of Kyleigh Turner in 1:31 at 142 pounds.
However, WW sewed up the win with a pin at 148 pounds, and added six points with a forfeit at 155 to close out the match.
Athens 41, Mifflinburg 33Athens won six of the first eight weight classes to build a big lead, then held on for a 41-33 win over Mifflinburg.
Mifflinburg struck first with a fall at 100 pounds, but freshman Alyssa Rinebold evened the match with a 46-second fall at 106 pounds, and junior Emma Renninger followed with a 33-second fall at 112 pounds to give the Wildcats a 12-6 lead.
After a forfeit to Athens senior Mary Henry at 118 pounds, sophomore Kaylynn Kletz scored a fall in 1:36 to make it 24-6.
Mifflinburg got back on the board with a pin at 130 pounds to close the gap to 24-12, but junior Hanna Rathbun, in 68 seconds, and freshman Memphis Paul, in 20 seconds, answered with falls to push the Wildcat advantage to 36-12.
Mifflinburg scored a fall at 148 and picked up a forfeit at 155 to make it 36-24, but sophomore Abigail Wagner sewed up the win for Athens with a 15-0 technical fall of Skyanne Little at 170 pounds to extend the lead to 41-24 with just two bouts remaining.
Mifflinburg scored a decision at 190, and picked up a forfeit at 235 to provide the final margin.
Athens 51, Towanda 24Athens won six of the seven bouts contested on the mats in a 51-24 win over Towanda in the final dual of the day.
After a forfeit to Towanda at 235, freshman Alyssa Rinebold tied the match back up with a pin of Hailey Harbst in 1:39.
After a forfeit to Towanda's Lillie Maynard made it 12-6, junior Emma Renninger, in 63 seconds, and senior Mary Henry, in 59 seconds, scored quick falls to give the Wildcats the lead for good, at 18-12.
After sophomore Kaylynn Kletz received a forfeit at 124 to push the Athens advantage to 24-12, Towanda's Kenzie Brown scored a fall at 2:35 to close the gap to 24-18.
Junior Hanna Rathbun answered on the mat with a pin of Ily Benjamin in 1:23 to make it 30-18, then freshman Memphis Paul and sophomore Janaya Heinrich received forfeits at 142 and 148, respectively, to extend the lead to 42-18.
After Towanda's Alivia Spencer picked up a forfeit at 155 pounds, Athens sophomore Abigail Wagner scored a 7-0 win over Elizabeth Naughton, and junior Haily Young won via fall in 3:02 over Adele Wecker to provide the final margin.
Athens returns to action this weekend at the Coal Cracker Invite at Jim Thorpe High School.
