IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: GROTON EDGES TIOGA, 54-52, IN FINAL SECONDS (2025-01-14)

GROTON — Jaiden Mitchell's bucket with 5 seconds remaining lifted Groton to a 54-52 win over Tioga here Tuesday night in IAC Small School crossover boys basketball action.

Junior James Miller knocked down a 3-pointer and scored nine points in the first quarter, while sophomore Jackson Bombard hit a 3-pointer and scored five points, and junior Dominic Palmer added four points to fuel an 18-5 Tioga blitz in the opening stanza.

The Red Hawks answered in the second quarter with a 25-point barrage. Bombard kept Tioga afloat with eight points in the stanza, including a 3-pointer and an old-fashion three-point play, and the game went to the half tied at 30-30.

Bombard knocked down his third trey of the game, and scored six points in the third quarter, but Groton used a 12-9 scoring advantage to take a 42-39 lead into the final eight minutes.

Palmer scored six points in the fourth quarter, and Kithcart drained a 3-pointer as Tioga outscored Groton, 13-10, to tie the game at 52-52 with less than one-half minute remaining.

Tioga had a chance at a game-winner after Mitchell's go-ahead bucket, but the shot was off-the-mark.

Bombard led Tioga with a career-high 21 points, five rebounds, five assists, and five steals, while Miller had 16 points and four rebounds, and Palmer had 12 points, 15 rebounds, five blocked shots, and five steals.

Sophomore Gavin Kithcart grabbed six rebounds for the Tigers, and senior Trystan Barton added three assists and three steals.

Tioga, now 3-8, returns to action Friday at S-VE.
