STAC BOYS BASKETBALL: POWERHOUSE SETON CATHOLIC ROLLS TO WIN OVER WAVERLY (24 PHOTOS) (2025-01-14)

Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY — Powerhouse Seton Catholic raced out to a big lead early, and cruised to an 87-49 win over Waverly here Tuesday night in STAC Central Division boys basketball action.

With the win, Seton Catholic, now 9-1 overall and 6-0 in the division, clinches a share of the Central Division title. Owego is 4-2, and Waverly 3-2 in divisional play.

Longtime Waverly coach Lou Judson could do nothing but tip his cap to the Saints.

"That's what the No. 4 team in the state in Class A looks like.

"They have a lot of weapons on the floor, you can't just key on one or two of them," said Judson. They can all shoot, they can all pass, and they can all handle the ball — with those combinations on the floor at the same time, they're going to pick you apart.

"We did some good things throughout the game, but they are just that much better than we are," added Judson.

The Saints built a 27-12 lead after the first eight minutes.

Junior Porter Daddona, who scored 11 of Waverly's first 16 points, and junior Hogan Shaw knocked down jumpers in the opening minute of the second quarter to close the gap to 27-16, but Seton Catholic answered with a 10-0 run to push the lead to 36-17 with 5:18 remaining in the first half.

Seton Catholic closed out the first half with a 43-23 lead.

The Saints continued to pour it on in the third quarter with a 29-15 run to take a 72-38 lead into the final eight minutes.

Daddona, who made 9 of 15 shots from the field, led Waverly with 21 points and nine rebounds.

"I was pleased with Porter Daddona on the offensive end tonight," said Judson. "I thought he took the ball to the basket harder than he has been. He had a good offensive night for us."

Hogan Shaw scored eight points for the Wolverines, while sophomore Carson Rockwell had six points, senior J.T. Williams added four points, junior Carter Davies had four boards, and sophomore Bryce LaForest added three rebounds and three assists.

Judson said there were some positives in the loss.

"We're not going to see a team like that in the playoffs," said Judson. "It was a good test, a good measuring stick to see where we are now compared to where we were in the beginning of the season.

"We made some improvements, but we have a lot more improvements to make," he added.

Waverly returns to action Friday at Owego.
