NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: SLOW START COSTLY; ATHENS FALLS AT WYALUSING, 40-27 (9 PHOTOS) (2025-01-15)

WYALUSING — Athens dug itself a hole in the opening stanza, and never recovered in a 40-27 loss to Wyalusing here Wednesday night in NTL Large School girls basketball action.

Emily Johns scored six points in the first quarter, and Alysha Botts added four points to fuel Wyalusing's 15-6 first-quarter run.

Chloe Bennett hit her second 3-pointer of the game in the second quarter as Wyalusing used a 9-6 spurt to take a 24-12 lead into the half time locker room.

Senior Sara Bronson scored six points in the first half for the Wildcats, and sophomore McKenna Jarvis added four.

Senior Addy Wheeler scored four points in the third quarter, and Athens used an 8-6 scoring advantage in the stanza to close the gap to 30-20 heading into the final eight minutes.

Wheeler and freshman Alissa Vough each connected on 3-pointers in the fourth quarter for the Wildcats, but the Rams closed the game with a 10-7 spurt to nail down the win.

Bronson led Athens with nine points and six rebounds, while Wheeler had seven points, six rebounds, two assists, and four steals, and Jarvis had seven points and six rebounds. Senior Kelsie Noel added four rebounds.

Athens, now 7-5, returns to action Friday at Wellsboro.

JV: Wyalusing 34, Athens 30 (Allison Kemp - 13 points).
