STAC WRESTLING: UNATEGO-UNADILLA VALLEY UPENDS SHORT-HANDED WAVERLY, 42-30 (24 PHOTOS) (2025-01-16)

Valley Sports Report
WAVERLY — Unatego-Unadilla Valley won seven of nine bouts to pull out a 42-30 win over a short-handed Waverly here Thursday night in non-league Section IV wrestling action.

The Wolverines, ranked No. 1 in Section IV, were without sophomore 215-pounder Mathias Welles, 138-pound junior Daltton Davis, and 124-pound freshman Drayton DeKay.

"The goal tonight was to win, but knowing what we were giving up we wanted to stay within 12 because we know what our starters could score," said Waverly coach Devan Witman. "Staying within 12 was a big deal for this team because if we were to face this team in six days (at the Section IV Duals) with our entire team, it's a completely different score."

Waverly jumped out to a quick 18-0 lead behind a 56-second pin by senior Jacob Sinsabaugh at 101, and a pin in 1:32 by sophomore Rhylee Stotler at 116 pounds, sandwiched around a forfeit to 8th-grader Avery Bowman at 108 pounds.

U-UV picked up a forfeit at 124 pounds, and consecutive falls at 131, 138 and 145 to take a 24-18 lead.

In the match of the night, junior Cooper Robinson scored a trio of takedowns in a 9-3 win over U-UV's Abdeen Zaggout. Robinson entered the night at 27-4 and ranked No. 1 in Section IV at 152 pounds, while Zaggout was 30-2 and ranked No. 2.

Robinson, who beat M-E's Albert Smith — ranked No. 1 at 160 pounds — in a 17-1 technical fall Wednesday, beat Zaggout earlier this season 10-3.

"That's the second time they've met this year, and it was about the same result," said Witman.

"That's two big nights in a row for Cooper (Robinson). Last night, he went up in weight and met up with one of the top 160-pounders (M-E's Albert Smith) in Section IV and got the job done.

"To come in here tonight and wrestle one of the top 152-pounders and get the job done here on our home mat is awesome.

"Cooper is wrestling really well, and he's just starting that peak we need at the end of the year," added Witman. "He's not there yet, but he starting that peak."

Wyatt Meade got U-UV back on track at 160 with a pin to make it 30-21.

Sophomore Parker Larson kept Waverly's hopes alive at 170 pounds with a 16-9 decision over Zack Sousa to close the gap to 30-24.

A forfeit to U-UV's Yanni Drapaniotis at 190 made it 36-24, and a pin at 215 sewed up the win.

Waverly's defending state champion Troy Beeman closed out the night with a 29-second fall to provide the final margin.

Waverly falls to 10-3 on the season, and travel to Tioga Saturday for a noon match.

Witman expects to be as healthy as the Wolverines can get (Welles is out for the season) for Wednesday's Section IV Duals.

"We have a big match against Tioga Saturday," said Witman. I'm not sure who will get back for that one, but the plan is to have everyone back in our line-up by Wednesday."
