STAC BOYS BASKETBALL: PRESSURE DEFENSE, SHAW PROPEL WAVERLY TO 81-46 WIN OVER S-VE (2025-01-18)

Valley Sports Report
SPENCER — Pressure defense, and a big dose of junior Hogan Shaw proved to be too much for S-VE in Waverly's 81-46 win here Saturday afternoon in non-league boys basketball action.

"(S-VE) is going through a rebuilding phase, and we overwhelmed them with our full-court pressure," said longtime Waverly coach Lou Judson.

"We were up 18 after the first quarter, which allowed us to work on a few things throughout the game," he noted.

Hogan Shaw came out of the locker room on fire, knocking down four 3-pointers and scoring 16 points in the first quarter to fuel a 24-9 blitz in the opening stanza.

"Hogan (Shaw) got our offense started with four 3-pointers in the first quarter," added Judson. "I was able to get a lot of playing time for everyone. Today’s game was a complete team effort."

Sophomore Ben Shaw and junior Porter Daddona each canned 3-pointers and scored five points apiece in the second quarter to lead Waverly's 21-13 advantage that gave the Wolverines a 45-22 lead at the half.

Hogan Shaw made two more 3-pointers and scored 10 points in the third quarter, but S-VE trimmed one point off its deficit and trailed 58-36 heading into the final eight minutes.

Daddona and junior Peyton Robinson, who drained a pair of 3-pointers, scored six points apiece, and junior Preston Besemer added four points as Waverly closed the game with a 23-10 run.

Shaw pumped in 31 points, including seven 3-pointers, and had four assists, and five steals, while Daddona had 13 points, seven rebounds, and one blocked shot, and Ben Shaw had nine points, five rebounds, four assists, and one blocked shot.

Junior Carter Davies had six points, four rebounds, and one block in the win, while Robinson had six points and four boards, sophomore Carson Rockwell added five points, three rebounds, and one blocked shot, and Besemer chipped in with four points and one block.

Junior Ronin Ault had six boards, two assists, and two steals for the Wolverines, while seniors J.T. Williams and Jack Cheresnowsky grabbed four rebounds apiece, senior Fletcher Good had three steals, and junior Trevor Blauvelt chipped in with three boards.

Waverly, now 8-5, returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Tioga.
