H.S. WRESTLING: WAVERLY EDGES TIOGA, 38-36; BEEMAN'S PIN SECURES WOLVERINES FIRST WIN OVER TIGERS SINCE 2010-11 (22 PHOTOS) (2025-01-18)

Valley Sports Report
TIOGA CENTER — Junior Troy Beeman's pin in the final bout lifted Waverly to a 38-36 win over Tioga here Saturday afternoon in Section IV wrestling action.

It's the first time the Wolverines have beaten the Tigers since December of the 2010-11 season when freshman Ryan Wolcott, who would win a state title in his senior season, scored a fall in the night's last bout to secure a 41-40 win.

"They've definitely had the upper hand on us over the last 15 years or so," said Waverly coach Devan Witman.

"We're both injured and sick right now, neither team is at their strongest, but coming into Tiger territory and being able to pull it out in the very last match is awesome," added Witman.

Witman said he couldn't asked for a better "closer" than Beeman.

"It's awesome to have Troy (Beeman) in that spot," he said. "We were in the same spot Wednesday, and M-E ended up forfeiting to him.

"This time he got to wrestle, and there's no one I would rather send out there when the match is on the line than Troy," added Witman. "He is a game wrestler, and he's ready to go all the time."

For the first time in his tenure at Tioga, Harrington has had to deal with a spate of injuries that began during the football season. The Tigers have been without a wrestler at 145, 152 and 160 for most of the season.

"It's been a really weird year for us with injuries and illnesses, and Waverly is going through the same thing," he said. "We joked before the match we could have wrestled this match at the hospital.

We've been really lucky with injuries in the nine years I've been here, but this year we've been bit a little bit.

"Starting minus-18 every match makes it really hard, and Waverly is a quality team," noted Harrington.

"I'm really proud of the way our guys are wrestling right now," Harrington added. "Our young guys are stepping up and wrestling as hard as they can — it shows a lot of promise for the future."

Tioga jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead with a forfeit to freshman Drayke Ulrich at 101, and a 26-pin of sophomore Declan McKee at 108 pounds.

Sophomore Rhylee Stotler put the Wolverines on the board with a 49-second fall at 116, but a forfeit to junior Logan Bellis gave the Tigers an 18-6 lead.

In the match of the night, Waverly junior Caden Bradley's second-period takedown was enough to pull out a 3-2 win over junior Brayden MacWhinnie at 132 pounds, trimming the deficit to 18-9.

"Caden (Bradley) had a big win for us," said Witman. "(Brayden) MacWhinnie is a tough kid, he's been around wrestling for a long time and knows how to wrestle."

Junior Jayden Duncanson extended the Tigers' lead to 24-9 with a 66-second fall at 138 pounds, but the Wolverines surged ahead, 27-24, with consecutive forfeit at 145 pounds (sophomore Joey Mack), 152 pounds (sophomore Parker Larson), and 160 pounds (senior Riley Pipher).

Junior Cooper Robinson, normally a 152-pounder, bumped up to 170 pounds and scored a 17-2 technical fall with five takedowns and two near-fall points at the second-period buzzer to give the Wolverines a 32-24 lead.

"We've asked a lot of Cooper (Robinson) this week, he's wrestled some top guys," said Witman. "Today, he went up two weight classes and got the job done."

At 190 pounds, Tioga sophomore James Howey built a 6-0 lead on Waverly senior Chris Moskowitz, before turning him for a fall at 4:56 to trim the deficit to 32-30.

A forfeit to senior Austin Babcock at 215 pounds gave the Tigers a 36-32 lead and set the stage for Beeman's heroics.

Beeman scored a takedown midway through the first period, and was able to turn senior Tate MaCauley to his back for the fall at 1:50.

Waverly (11-3) and Tioga (3-3) now await word on qualifying for Wednesday's Section IV Duals at Waverly High School.
