STAC JV BOYS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY RACKS UP WINS OVER OWEGO, S-VE (2025-01-20)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Waverly allowed just one field goal in the second half, and rallied for a 42-24 win over Owego here Friday night in STAC Central Division, then rolled over S-VE Saturday afternoon in junior varsity boys basketball action.
Waverly 42, Owego 24The River Hawks led 11-7 after the first quarter, and used a 9-8 advantage in second quarter to take a 20-15 lead into the halftime locker room.
Braiden Judson knocked down a 3-pointer and scored five points in the third quarter, while Eric Lewis and Axel Murray each scored four points, and Jack Pipher knocked down a 3-pointer in an 18-2 blitz that gave the Wolverines a 33-22 lead heading into the final seven minutes.
Owego was 2-for-8 from the free-throw line in the quarter, making the free throws with 1 second left.
Judson canned a 3-pointer, and three of his teammates added buckets in the fourth quarter as the Wolverines closed the game with a 9-2 run. Owego's lone bucket came with 40 seconds remaining in the game.
Judson led a balanced Waverly attack with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Pipher had nine points, six rebounds, three steals, and one blocked shot, and Sam Cheresnowsky had eight points, three rebounds, three assists, four steals, and one blocked shot.
Murray had six points and one blocked shot in the win, while Lewis scored six points, Chase Wheeler grabbed five boards and dished out three assists, and Collin Wheeler pulled down six rebounds.
Waverly 81, S-VE 16Eight of Waverly's nine players scored at least five points, and all nine found the scoring column in the Wolverines' 81-16 rout of S-VE Saturday.
Sam Cheresnowsky scored seven points in the first quarter, and Drew Croft knocked down a pair of 3-pointers to lead Waverly's 21-5 game-opening run.
Collin Wheeler connected on a 3-pointer and scored five points in the second quarter, and Axel Murray and Braiden Judson scored four points apiece to fuel Waverly's 21-5 blitz that stretched the lead to 42-10 at the half.
Cheresnowsky and Croft scored five points apiece in the third quarter in a 17-3 run that extended the lead to 59-13 after three quarters.
Judson and Murray scored six points apiece in the fourth quarter, and Croft drained a 3-pointer in a game-closing 22-5 run.
Croft led Waverly with 16 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, five rebounds, two assists, and five steals, while Cheresnowsky had 14 points, three rebounds, four assists, three steals, and two blocked shots, and Murray had 12 points, 12 rebounds, two assists, six steals, and two blocked shots.
Judson had 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists in the win, while Collin Wheeler had nine points, four rebounds, two assists, and four steals, and Chase Wheeler had seven points, five rebounds, two assists, and one blocked shots
Eric Lewis added six points, four rebounds, and one blocked shot for the Wolverines, while Rylan Larson chipped in with five points, and Logan Streeter grabbed four rebounds
The Waverly varsity team will host Tioga Saturday, but the JV team is off until Jan. 28 when it hosts Norwich.
