Valley Sports ReportJOHNSON CITY — Senior Troy Beeman and sophomore Rhylee Stotler each won STAC titles here Saturday, and six of their Waverly teammates reached the podium to lead the Wolverines to a second-place finish at the league wrestling championships.
Freshman Drayton DeKay, and juniors Caden Bradley, Daltton Davis, and Cooper Robinson were runners-up for the Wolverines, while 8th-grader Avery Bowman placed third, and sophomore Parker Larson placed fifth.
Horseheads claimed the team title with 247 points, well ahead of Waverly's 169.5 points. Maine-Endwell finished third with 168 points, while Windsor was fourth with 105, Chenango Forks was fifth with 103 points, and Johnson City was sixth with 90.5 points.
Beeman, the top seed at 285 pounds, was 3-0 to claim the title, but it wasn't easy.
Beeman opened with a 67-second fall of Johnson City Marc-Hendley Jean-Francois in the quarterfinals, then edged fourth-seeded Trey Parker of Susquehanna Valley 3-2 in ultimate tie-breaker.
In the finals, Beeman decked Horseheads' Seamus Carroll in 2:18.
Stotler, the second seed at 116 pounds, was 3-0 with two falls, and a technical fall.
Stotler opened with a pin of Corning's Jesse Clark in 2:54 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Stotler scored a fall of third-seeded Tanner Knapp of Horseheads in 3:37.
In the finals, Stotler forged a 17-2 technical fall of top-seeded Peyton Hubbard of Chenango Forks in 5:01.
DeKay, the second seed at 124 pounds, opened the day with a 17-1 technical fall of Horseheads' Joel Scibek in 2:08, then pinned third-seeded Ryder DePaula-Reese of Elmira at the first-period buzzer.
In the finals, reigning state champion Maverick Beckwith scored a 16-0 technical fall win over DeKay in 4:28.
Bradley, the second seed at 131 pounds, scored a 21-5 technical fall win over Vestal's Nick Hardy in the quarterfinals, then edged third-seeded Evan Morrell of Maine-Endwell, 3-2, in overtime.
In the finals, Bradley dropped a 7-3 decision to top seeded Collin Monell of Owego Free Academy.
Davis, the top seed at 138 pounds, scored a 15-7 major decision over Horseheads' Kole Zufall in the quarterfinals, then forged a 6-0 win over fourth-seeded Grant MacRabie of Chenango Forks.
In the finals, Davis dropped a 6-3 decision to third-seeded Donny Winslow of Vestal.
Robinson, the second seed at 152 pounds, scored a 17-2 technical fall win over Elmira's Scott Fairbanks in the quarterfinals.
In the semis, Robinson won via injury default at 5:36 over third-seeded Zach Schrage of Horseheads.
In the finals, Robinson dropped a 13-3 major decision to top-seeded William Ackley of Johnson City.
Bowman, the third seed at 108 pounds, scored a 16-0 technical fall in the quarterfinals over Ithaca's Caleb Bergman at the third-period buzzer.
In the semifinals, Bowman lost via fall at 5:58 to second-seeded Josh Knapp of Horseheads.
Bowman bounced back in the consolation semifinals with a pin of Chenango Forks' Maddox Hubbard in 1:45.
In the third-place match, Bowman scored a 9-6 win over Oneonta's Marshall Maher.
Larson went 2-2 on the day to finish fifth in the 152-pound weight class.
Larson lost his opening-round bout to Schrage via fall in 3:28.
Larson bounced back with an 8-5 win over Fairbanks, but lost via second-period fall to Oneonta's Alan Little in the consolation semifinals.
In the fifth-place match, Larson won via medial forfeit.
At 138 pounds, sophomore Joey Mack was 2-2 on the day.
Mack opened his day with a pin of U-E's Jacob Dillenbeck in 2:55, but lost to Winslow via first-period fall in the quarterfinals.
Mack bounced back with a pin of Corning's Blake Teeter at the second-period buzzer, but dropped an 8-5 decision to Windsor's Cody Anderson in the third round of wrestlebacks.
At 131 pounds, sophomore Nico Rae was 2-2 on the day.
Rae opened with a takedown in sudden-victory for a 12-9 win over Corning's Nicholas Woodcock, but lost to Merrell in the quarterfinals via first-period fall.
Rae bounced back with a pin of Johnson City's Jobrien Backus, but lost to Hardy via second-period fall in the third round of wrestlebacks.
Waverly is off until the Section IV, Division II Qualifier B on Feb. 8.
