NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: EARLY THREES PROPEL ATHENS TO BIG WIN OVER SAYRE (24 PHOTOS) (2025-01-28)
Valley Sports ReportSAYRE — Athens dialed up long-distance early, and led by 14 after the first quarter on its way to a 60-13 win over Sayre here Tuesday night in NTL girls basketball action.
Senior Sara Bronson knocked down a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter, while sophomore McKenna Jarvis also scored six points, including a 3-pointer, and senior Addy Wheeler added a trey in an 18-4 blitz in the opening eight minutes.
Wheeler scored six points in the second quarter to spark a 9-2 spurt that gave the Wildcats a 27-6 lead at the intermission.
The Wildcats poured it on in the second half.
Jarvis scored seven points in the third quarter, and Wheeler and Bronson, who drained two more 3-pointers, added six points apiece to fuel a 19-4 run that extended the Athens lead to 46-10 entering the final eight minutes.
Jarvis scored eight points in the fourth quarter in a 14-3 game-closing run.
Jarvis led Athens with 21 points and five steals.while Wheeler had 15 points, four rebounds, seven assists, and nine steals, and Bronson had 15 points, including four 3-pointers, and three steals.
Freshman Alissa Vough added four points, four rebounds, and six steals in the win, while senior Megan Morgan pulled down four rebounds, and freshman Allison Kemp chipped in with three boards.
Senior Abbie McGaughey led Sayre with five points, six rebounds, and one blocked shot, while junior Rylee Lantz had four points, 10 rebounds, and one blocked shot, and junior Lizzie Hunter had two assists and two blocked shots.
Athens, now 12-5, returns to action Thursday at Towanda, while Sayre, now 2-13, hosts Williamson.
