NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: ATHENS HANGS TOUGH IN 50-39 LOSS TO DIVISION CHAMP TROY (10 PHOTOS) (2025-02-06)
Valley Sports ReportATHENS — Troy took the lead early on its way to a 50-39 win over a pesky Athens squad here Thursday night in NTL Large School Division girls basketball action.
Troy, now 16-4, clinched its second straight division title with a 68-27 win over Towanda Tuesday.
The Trojans jumped out to a 16-10 lead in the first quarter, thanks to nine points from Alyssa Parks.
Giani Renzi canned a pair of 3-pointers, and Parks knocked down her second trey of the game to give Troy six in the first half.
Senior Sara Bronson hit a 3-pointer for the Wildcats and freshman Allison Kemp had an old-fashion three-point play, but Troy had a 13-12 advantage in the stanza to take a 29-22 lead into the halftime locker room.
Kemp and Bronson each hit a 3-pointer in the third quarter and Athens trimmed one point off the lead to trim the deficit to 37-32 heading into the final eight minutes.
Kemp hit another 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, and sophomore McKenna Jarvis converted a conventional three-point play, but the Trojans put the game away with a 12-7 run.
Kemp led Athens with 11 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, while Wheeler had eight points, five rebounds and three assists, and Jarvis had eight points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Bronson added six points on a pair of 3-pointers for the Wildcats, and senior Kelsie Noel chipped in with four points, three rebounds, and two assists.
Parks led Troy with 18 points, including three 3-pointers, while Kailyn Sterling had 12 points, and Renzi added nine points on a trio of 3-pointers.
Athens wraps up the regular season Monday when it hosts Wyalusing.
