STAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: WAVERLY TOPS CHENANGO VALLEY, 41-30, TO FORCE CENTRAL DIVISION PLAYOFF (22 PHOTOS) (2025-02-12)
Valley Sports ReportWAVERLY — Waverly turned in another strong defensive effort in a 41-30 win over Chenango Valley here Wednesday night in STAC Central Divisional girls basketball action.
With the win, the Wolverines force a divisional playoff game at Chenango Forks Saturday at noon. Both teams finished 11-1 in league play, with their losses coming against each other. The winner hosts Horseheads Wednesday in the STAC semifinals.
Chenango Valley jumped out to a 10-7 lead after the first quarter. Junior Kaitlyn Sutton scored five points, including a 3-pointer, in the first quarter to keep Waverly close.
Sutton and sophomore Ryleigh Judson each knocked down 3-pointers in the second quarter to lead Waverly in a 10-6 run that put the Wolverines up 17-16 at the half.
Waverly found the range from behind the 3-point arc in the second half, with all six of its field goals coming from deep.
Senior Addison Westbrook canned a pair of 3-pointers, and junior Brilynn Belles and Judson both connected from behind the arc in a 12-7 run that extended the Waverly lead to 29-22 heading into the final eight minutes.
Judson drilled a pair of 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter, and the Wolverines, who were shooting 49.8 percent from the free-throw line entering the game, went 6-for-6 at the line down the stretch — with Westbrook making four, and Judson two — to nail down the win.
Judson, who had four of Waverly's nine 3-pointers, and Westbrook, who knocked down a pair of treys, led the Wolverines with 14 points apiece, while Sutton, who hit two 3-pointers, added eight points.
Tiffani Schaefer led CV with a game-high 15 points.
Waverly improves to 16-2 on the season.
