ON TAP TODAY: WAVERLY SEEKS FIRST BACK-TO-BACK SECTION IV BOYS BASKETBALL TITLES IN MORE THAN 70 YEARS (2025-03-09)
Valley Sports ReportTHE VALLEY — Last year, Waverly ended a 28-year drought with its first Section IV boys basketball title since 1996. On Sunday, the Wolverines have a chance to win back-to-back title for the first time since 1952-53.

Class B Championship
2-Waverly (13-9) vs. 1-Dryden (18-3), 3:15 p.m. @ Visions Arena: The Wolverines are coming off a 64-49 win over Lansing in the semifinals, while the Purple Lions topped Chenango Forks, 55-40.
Waverly beat Watkins Glen 66-42 in the quarterfinals.
During the regular season, Dryden beat both Lansing (66-50) and Watkins Glen (79-47) at home, but lost to both of them (60-50 to Watkins Glen, and 57-52 to Lansing) on the road.
Dryden also won the IAC Large School championship game with a 72-69 win over Notre Dame.
Waverly's 1951-52 and '52-'53 teams, led by Bill Rolls topped Johnson City, led by future Duke standout Robert "Red" Lakata at Cornell's Barton Hall.
Rolls was Waverly's all-time leading scorer with 1,272 points in a three-year career (and no 3-point line). He has since been surpassed by Joey Tomasso (1,782 points) and David Sickler (1,519).
