NTL BOYS BASEBALL: ATHENS POUNDS OUT 19-4 WIN OVER WYALUSING; IMPROVES TO 3-0 (2025-03-27)

Valley Sports Report
WYALUSING — Athens scored in every inning, including a nine-run outburst in the second inning, en route to a 19-4 four-inning win over Wyalusing here Thursday in NTL Large School Division baseball action.

"Offensively we have been locked in," said Athens coach Charlie Havens. "(Nick) Grazul had a big day with a dinger.

"Duncan (Thetga) pitched well," noted Havens. "He was around the plate all day.

"It's exciting stuff," he added.

The Wildcats finish off the first week at 3-0 with wins over Troy, Wellsboro, and Wyalusing.

"It was a great first week of baseball," said Havens. "Three wins against division teams, I can’t ask for more.

"We still have some things to clean up defensively and on the bases," added Havens. "We’ll get to work on those things tomorrow."

The bottom of the Athens line-up — sophomores Brady Flynn and Zac Fisher, and junior Karson Sipley — and lead-off hitter Nick Grazul — paced Athens' 12-hit attack with seven hits and 10 RBI in support of winning pitcher sophomore Dylan Thetga.

Athens plated an unearned run in the top of the first, then blew the game open in the second.

Consecutive walks to junior Eli Hobday and Flynn, followed by a double steal, put runners on second and third. After a wild pitch scored Hobday, Fisher hit an RBI groundball single to make it 3-0.

With one out, Grazul cleared the left-field fence with a two-run round-tripper to make it 5-0.

Senior Troy Rosenbloom re-ignited the rally with a single, and took second on an outfield error, then scored on an RBI single to left field by sophomore Connor Davidson.

Three pitches later, sophomore Brendan Cooke hit an RBI double to make it 7-0. After walks to Hobday and sophomore Kam Wheeler loaded the bases, Flynn grounded a two-run single up the middle, and Fisher plated a run with a groundout to extend the lead to 10-0.

The Wildcats added four more runs in the third inning to push the lead to 14-0. The rally featured RBI singles by Hobday and Sipley, and a sacrifice fly from Davidson.

Fisher singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in three runs, while Sipley scored twice and had three RBI, Grazul homered and singled, scored two runs, and knocked in two runs, and Flynn singled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs to pace the Wildcat attack.

Cooke doubled and singled, scored two runs, and knocked in one run in the win, while Davidson singled, scored two runs, and had two RBI, Eli Hobday singled, scored two runs, and drove in one run, Wheeler scored three runs and had two RBI, Rosenbloom singled and scored two runs, and junior Eli Chapman and senior Noah Hobday each crossed the plate once.

Thetga was the beneficiary of the run support in earning the win. He allowed four runs and four hits, while striking out seven and walking three in four innings.

Athens travels to North Penn-Mansfield Tuesday.
